Responding to advertised positions

Before formally applying for a position, it is a good idea to call the employer and find out some more details about the job.

Job applications and interviews take a lot of time and effort, so don't waste time by applying for jobs without first finding out you have the exact skills required and it appeals to you.

Calling the employer prior to applying for a job allows you to find out specific information to include in your application. This will give you a competitive advantage over the other applicants. Speak clearly and if it helps, write down what questions you need to ask before you ring. To begin, state your name and the type of job you are interested in and where you saw it advertised. If your call results in a meeting, take a printed copy of your resume to give to the person you meet and make sure you record the person's name whom you are meeting so you can use this when you meet them.

Emailing your letter of application plus your resume in response to an advertised position

In this day and age it is most likely you will be emailing your application letter and resume to employers. Provide all details the advertisement asks for and present it in the way the employer has requested.

It is polite to write a few sentences in the body of your email saying: To (use the person’s name wherever possible, for example Mr Smith), include the title of the job you are applying for and position number, what documents you have attached (resume and covering letter), add 'yours sincerely' and sign off with your name.

Ensure you provide an appropriate title for each document including your name and the name of the document (for example Clare Jones Resume).

Uploading documents for online applications

If you are applying for a position online, you need to 'upload' your letter and resume and if required, your responses to key selection criteria.

Give yourself plenty of time and use a secure computer that won't fail midway through your application. Prior to commencing your application, see if there are page or word limits to avoid you writing five pages when the limit is three. Also check document size and accepted formats. Some sites ask for word documents only, so do not attach PDF copies.

Always check your spelling, that your sentences make sense and ensure you are uploading the final, complete version of your application. Ensure all your documents have uploaded correctly. Print a copy of the application number or confirmation to say your application was accepted.
